Dow Jones Newswires: American Eagle Outfitters stock falls despite earnings beat

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. on Wednesday reported higher-than-expected earnings in its latest quarter, as the company reported an expanded customer base.

The Pennsylvania-based clothing company reported fourth-quarter revenue of $1.51 billion, compared with $1.29 billion in the previous year. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.51 billion in sales.

posted a profit of $50.4 million compared with $3.5 million a year earlier.

Earnings per share was 25 cents in the latest quarter, compared with 2 cents a share a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, earnings were 35 cents a share. Analysts were expecting 30 cents.

Revenue from its Aerie brand rose 27% from a year earlier to $428 million. American Eagle revenue grew 11% to $1.04 billion.

Shares fell more than 6% in after-hours trading after the results were announced Wednesday.
